Celebrating 100 Years of Olympic Dreams
On the 11th May 2024 the Manly Swimming Club celebrated the centenary of the 1924 Paris Olympics and the influence Northern Beaches athletes have had in creating sporting pathways at a magnificent Gala Dinner hosted by Olympian and former Manly Swimming Club member Brooke Hanson OAM.
History
The year 2024 marks the centenary of the 1924 Paris Olympics, commemorating the remarkable accomplishments of local Manly athletes, particularly those affiliated with the Manly Swimming Club. Australia, during the 1924 Paris Olympics, secured a total of 3 Gold, 1 Silver, and 2 Bronze medals. Notably, the Manly Swimming Club contributed significantly to this tally, earning 2 Gold, 1 Silver, and 1 Bronze medal. Our local heroes proudly brought home a total of 4 medals, with standout performances including:
- Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton, clinching his inaugural Olympic Gold in the 1500m Freestyle—an achievement that marked the beginning of Australia’s enduring dominance in this event.
- Richmond Cavill ‘Dick’ Eve securing Gold in platform diving, a feat that stood unmatched in Australian diving for 80 years until Chantelle Newbury’s Gold win in Athens 2004. The next Australian male to claim Gold in diving was Matthew Mitcham in Beijing 2008.
- Manly’s Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton and Ernest Henry, alongside Sir Frank Beaurepair and Moss Christie, combined to win a Silver medal in the 4 x 200 Freestyle.
- Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton winning his second medal of that Olympics with a Bronze in the 400m Freestyle.
- Intriguingly, the other Australian Gold Medallist at the 1924 Paris Olympics was Nick Winter in the Triple Jump. While not a member of the Manly Swimming Club, he hailed from Manly, adding to Manly’s sporting pride.
These Olympics reinforced the athletic prowess of our locals and continues to set an example for future Olympians based on the beaches. The ‘Andrew Boy Charlton Aquatic Centre’ is home to the Manly Swimming Club, a leading swimming facility for our future sporting stars.
